Each second a truckload full of textiles is thrown away.
It is mind-blowing to think about the amounts of textiles that are used only a few times and then treated as waste. No doubt that the entire textile industry from manufacturing to disposal has a huge environmental and social impact.
“Less than 1% of the fibers are reused in fiber-to-fiber loops, while 10 – 15% are used for low quality products such as cloths, insulation material or stuffing in furniture and mattresses.” *1
It would be a utopic dream to imagine a society without textiles. The aim cannot be to remove textiles from the face of the earth. Instead we need to find a way to manufacture, use and dispose textiles, which minimizes the social and environmental impacts. The aim is to minimize our consumption and our craving for new things and instead wear down what we have already produced.
To be able to have a circular mindset, when we manufacture textiles, we need to start with the design. At TOIL ‘N’ MOIL, we have done this in a couple of ways. Firstly by thinking about the number of styles, we have in our collection, and secondly by choosing materials that are environmentally friendly.
Our Essential Collection aims to challenge our “gotta have” culture. Is it really necessary to have ten different styles of work pants? In some cases the only difference between two pairs of pants is a small pocket. If we design a couple of different styles, we believe, we can cover the needs of most people, and by that itself, we are already minimizing consumption. On top of this, we aim to design workwear which is durable and comfortable to wear, which means, You would want to wear it for a longer time instead of buying new. We all know the feeling of a pair of favourite pants.
When it comes to materials, we have made an attempt to manufacture our workwear in materials which are environmentally friendly without compromising on durability and the clothes being comfortable to wear. Our Essential Collection is made from organic cotton and manufactured by suppliers who are all GOTS certified. This means that they take both the environment and their social responsibility seriously. They care. And so do we. Do you?
